Inspirational Quotes

"The moment I decided to follow instead of lead, I discovered the joys of becoming part of a small child's world."
-Janet Gonzalez-Mena

"When we strengthen families, we ultimately strengthen the community. Our goal is that parents everywhere work with supportive providers, feel confident in their parenting role, and form strong, resilient attachments with their children. To help achieve this, providers must be responsive to parents, knowledgeable about child development, and eager to see every parent succeed." -T. Berry Brazelton

“How our nation treats its children reflects our societal values. Children can’t vote. They depend on us — parents, grandparents, pediatricians, teachers, and other child health advocates and professionals, to do right by them, stand up for them, and advocate for what they need to grow and prosper." - T. Berry Brazelton

"I wanted to be a teacher because I had a built-in passion that it was important to make a real contribution to the world."
-Louise Derman-Sparks

"We as professionals in early childhood have the opportunity to shape a child's life, so that is what makes me passionate about this field."
- Sandy Escobido

"The prime purpose of being four is to enjoy being four of secondary importance is to prepare for being five."

 ~Jim Trelease

  1. I love Janet Gonzalez-Mena's quote about following instead of leading and how that helps you gain a better insight into a child's world. Too often as adults we tend to lead children in the path that we want them to take without taking a moment to 'listen' to what they have to say. The Reggio Philosophy and the Project Approach both emphasize allowing the children to lead in their learning.

I agree with Sandy Escobido when she says that we have the opportunity to shape a child's life. Last night I watched a movie 'Lean on me' starring Morgan Freeman inspired by true events. It was about a principal who was given the challenge of turning around a failing high school in NJ. His believed in his students and helped them regain self-respect and a love of learning and was such an inspiration to them to turn their lives around for the better. He took a personal interest in them and even helped individual families. It shows that as educators we can and must do all we can to make that difference. Hope you get a chance to watch it, a truly inspiring movie.

  2. As a professional, shaping or inspiring a childʻs life is so important. I share with a few of the youths I work with that if you model the correct actions, you will not have to deal with the outcome when these children come of age. Yet, if you model a wrongful action, it is only you that need to correct these actions later on. Put or do the right thing first, it is the right path to lead. Sandy Escobido shares her passion as a professional shaping a childʻs life.

King Kamehameha III, Kauʻikeaouli, shared a very wise saying, "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka ʻAina I Ka Pono" which means the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness or poetically it means to care for the foundation with righteousness - our children (Pukuʻi, 1983). This wise saying is the motto of the State of Hawaiʻi - found on the quarter representing the State of Hawaiʻi.

    1. Keala, I find it very interesting, after reading the information on Be My Voice Hawai'i, that your legislators don't follow King Kamehameha's words. There is special irony that the saying is found on money! ;) I always look forward to reading what you post, you bring a wonderful perspective to our group! Carolyn
